A little preparation before your plasterer arrives can save significant time, protect your belongings, and help the job go smoothly. Here is what to do.
Clear the Room
Move all furniture out of the room or to the centre and cover it with dust sheets. Plastering generates a lot of fine dust that settles everywhere. The plasterer will usually bring their own dust sheets but the more you protect, the better.
Remove Wall Fixtures
Take down picture frames, mirrors, curtain poles and any wall-mounted items. Remove light switches and socket covers if the plasterer will be working right up to them. Switch off power to the room at the consumer unit if electrics are being replastered around.
Protect Floors
Cover floors with dust sheets or hardboard, especially carpet. Wet plaster is very difficult to remove from carpet once it has dried. If you have wooden floors, a layer of hardboard on top of dust sheeting gives better protection.
Ensure Good Access and Ventilation
Plasterers need clear access to all walls and the ceiling. Leave a clear route from the front door to the room being plastered — they will need to bring in boards, plaster bags and a mixer. Open windows to ensure ventilation, especially for mixing and during drying.
What Happens on the Day
The plasterer will typically arrive with all materials. They will mix plaster using a paddle mixer and apply it with a plastering trowel. A skilled plasterer works fast — a single room can often be done in a day. They will flatten and polish the plaster as it dries to achieve the final finish.
After Plastering: Drying and Decorating
Fresh plaster needs 4–6 weeks to fully dry before painting. Keep the room ventilated but not cold. Apply a mist coat (50:50 emulsion and water) as the first coat to avoid flashing. Do not use vinyl silk paint on new plaster as it is too impermeable.
