When Skimming Is Not Recommended
While skimming is a great cosmetic fix, it isn’t a “magic bullet” for all wall problems. In some scenarios, it will simply fail.
Avoid Skimming If:
- The Plaster is Loose: If the old plaster is “blown” (hollow when tapped), a new skim coat will eventually fall off.
- There is Damp: Skimming over damp will lead to mould and peeling within months.
- Structural Issues: Deep, moving cracks suggest foundation issues that cosmetic plaster won’t fix.
In these cases, a full replaster is usually necessary to ensure a long-lasting result.
