Floor screed is a layer of sand and cement (or a specialist compound) applied over a concrete sub-floor to create a level, smooth surface ready for floor finishes like tiles, wood or vinyl. It is an essential part of most new builds, extensions and renovation projects.

How Thick Should Screed Be?
Traditional sand-and-cement screed should be at least 65mm thick when bonded to the substrate. Liquid screed can be applied at just 30–40mm, making it excellent where floor height is a concern. Both types require a level sub-floor; screeding will not fix structural floor problems, only surface ones.
Can Screed Be Applied Over Underfloor Heating?
Yes — screed is the most common bedding material for underfloor heating pipes or cables. Liquid (anhydrite) screed is particularly good for UFH as it flows around pipes without air pockets, conducts heat efficiently and does not crack as it dries.
How Long Does Screed Take to Dry?
Traditional screed needs approximately 1 day per mm of thickness before it can be walked on, and 4–6 weeks before floor finishes can be applied. In practice, a 65mm screed might take 6–8 weeks. Liquid screeds dry faster — a 40mm anhydrite screed may be ready for light foot traffic in 24–48 hours.
