Can You Skim Damaged Plaster?
In many cases, yes—but the success of the job depends entirely on the preparation and the type of damage.
When You Can Skim
- Small Cracks & Holes: These can be filled and taped before the skim coat is applied.
- Rough Textures: Surfaces like Artex can be skimmed if they are stable.
The Preparation Process
You must repair holes, sand rough areas, and apply a bonding primer to ensure the new layer adheres properly. However, if the damage is severe, skimming may not be the right choice. See When Skimming is Not Recommended.
