About Internal Rendering

Internal rendering is the application of a base coat of render — typically sand-and-cement, browning plaster, or bonding coat — to brick, block, or stone masonry walls. This base coat fills out any unevenness, creates a flat backing surface, and provides the right key for a finishing skim coat of plaster on top.

Internal rendering is common in older solid-wall properties, newly built extensions with blockwork walls, and any room where new masonry surfaces need to be plastered for the first time. It is also used when old plaster has been completely removed and walls need to be built up from scratch.

Our network of vetted plasterers covers all types of internal render work. Get up to 3 free quotes and compare prices and availability.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need internal rendering rather than just skimming?
Rendering is needed when walls are bare masonry (brick, block, stone), when existing plaster has been stripped back to the wall, or when major build-up is needed. If existing plaster is sound and just needs a fresh finish, skimming alone may suffice.
What is the difference between bonding coat and browning?
Browning plaster is used on absorbent backgrounds like brick and sand/cement. Bonding coat is used on low-suction surfaces like concrete or plasterboard. Both create a backing layer for the finish skim coat.
How long does internal render take to dry?
A sand-and-cement backing coat needs 24–48 hours before the skim coat can be applied, and the whole job (render + skim) typically needs 3–5 days to reach painting condition.
Can I render over old plaster?
In some cases yes, but if old plaster is loose, blown, or contaminated with damp, it must be removed first. Your plasterer will assess the existing surface and advise on the best approach.
Do plasterers supply materials?
Most plasterers supply and include all materials in their quote. It is worth confirming this when receiving quotes so you are comparing like-for-like.
