About Plasterboarding & Dry Lining

Plasterboarding — also called dry lining — is the fastest and most common method of creating smooth internal surfaces on walls and ceilings in modern construction. Plasterboard panels are fixed either by screwing to a timber or metal stud framework, or adhesively using the dot-and-dab method directly to masonry walls.

Once boards are in place, joints are taped and the whole surface is skimmed with a finish coat of plaster (or left tape-and-jointed for a painted finish). Plasterboarding is typically quicker and cheaper than traditional sand-and-cement plastering for new build or refurbishment work.

Whether you need a new stud partition wall, a loft conversion boarded out, or dot-and-dab on solid masonry walls, get free quotes from vetted local tradespeople through our service.

Frequently asked questions

What is dot-and-dab?
Dot-and-dab is a method of fixing plasterboard directly to masonry walls using adhesive dabs rather than a stud framework. It is faster and cheaper than building a stud wall, and is very common in domestic renovation.
How thick is plasterboard?
The most common thicknesses are 9.5mm (for ceilings) and 12.5mm (for walls). Specialist boards include fire-rated (15mm), acoustic, moisture-resistant (pink or green board for bathrooms), and thermal boards.
Can I have plasterboard without the skim coat?
Yes — tape-and-joint finishing leaves a smooth surface ready for painting without a skim coat. However, a skimmed finish is smoother and more durable. Most tradespeople offer both options.
How long does plasterboarding take?
A single room can typically be boarded in one day, with skimming on the following day. Drying then takes 24–48 hours. A full house or loft conversion will take longer — your tradesperson can give a timeline when quoting.
Do I need building regs for a stud partition wall?
In most cases, a non-structural internal partition wall does not require building regulations approval. However, if it affects fire compartmentation (e.g. between floors) or structural elements, you should check with your local authority.

“Had a whole house replaster after buying our Victorian terrace. The plasterer recommended through this site was brilliant — on time, tidy and the finish was excellent. No hesitation recommending.”
