About Venetian Plastering

Venetian plastering — known in Italian as Stucco Lustro or Stucco Veneziano — is a centuries-old decorative technique originating in Renaissance Italy. It uses a putty of marble dust and slaked lime, applied in multiple thin translucent coats and polished to a brilliant sheen. The result is a surface with the visual depth and warmth of polished marble, at a fraction of the cost of stone.

Authentic Venetian plaster requires an experienced decorative plasterer. The material is applied with a Venetian or Venetian-style trowel in thin, overlapping strokes, each coat allowed to firm up before the next is applied. The final burnishing pass uses a clean, slightly warm trowel to create the characteristic gloss.

Venetian plaster is ideal for reception rooms, hotel lobbies, feature walls, and bathrooms. Get free quotes from vetted specialist plasterers through our network.

What’s involved

Substrate preparation to a perfectly flat, primed surface
Application of 2–3 thin coats of Venetian plaster material
Partial burnishing between coats to build the layered depth
Final burnish — achieved with a clean, slightly heated trowel

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Venetian plaster and polished plaster?
Venetian plaster (Stucco Lustro) specifically uses marble dust and lime, applied in the traditional Italian method. "Polished plaster" is a broader term covering Venetian plaster and other burnished systems including acrylic-based Marmorino. True Venetian uses mineral materials only.
Is Venetian plaster only suitable for certain rooms?
Venetian plaster works in almost any interior room. It is particularly popular in hallways, living rooms, and bathrooms. In wet areas, an appropriate sealer is applied to prevent moisture absorption.
Can you DIY Venetian plastering?
Venetian plastering can be attempted as a DIY project with training and patience, but achieving a consistent, professional-quality burnished finish is extremely difficult without practice. Most homeowners prefer to use a specialist for visible feature walls.
How do I maintain Venetian plaster?
Venetian plaster is very low maintenance. Dust with a soft cloth or brush. For marks, wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth. Re-wax every few years to maintain the sheen. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
Can Venetian plaster be applied to curved walls or arches?
Yes — one of the advantages of Venetian plaster over other finishes is that it follows the contours of the surface. Curved walls, arches, and recesses all work well. The plasterer will use smaller sections of trowel for tight curves.
