About Skimming

Skimming is the application of a thin 2–3mm coat of finishing plaster — typically Thistle Multi-Finish or similar — over an existing plaster, plasterboard, or bonding coat surface. It produces the smooth, flat result needed before painting or wallpapering. Skimming is the most common domestic plastering task in the UK.

Most skimming jobs take one day per room, with the surface ready for mist-coat painting within 24–48 hours. A plasterer will assess the existing surface first — if it is sound and well-keyed, they can skim straight over it. Loose or contaminated areas need to be made good first.

Frequently asked questions

How long does skimming take to dry?
A fresh skim coat turns from dark to pale as it dries — usually 24–48 hours before it is ready for a mist coat. Full curing (carbonation) takes 4–6 weeks, so always use a diluted mist coat before applying emulsion paint.
Can you skim over old plaster?
Yes, provided the existing plaster is firm and well-bonded. A plasterer will tap the wall to check for hollow areas. Any loose sections must be cut out and made good before skimming over the rest.
Do I need skimming or a full replaster?
If the plaster is generally sound but the surface is rough, worn, or cracked at the top layer, skimming is sufficient. If large sections are blown, damp-damaged, or the plaster is very old and soft, a full replaster (hack off and re-plaster from scratch) is better value long-term.
How thin is a skim coat?
A standard finish skim coat is 2–3mm thick — much thinner than a backing or render coat. This is enough to create a perfectly smooth surface over a sound backing, but it does require the right surface preparation to adhere correctly.
What is the difference between skimming and plastering?
Skimming refers specifically to the thin finishing coat. "Plastering" is often used loosely to mean the whole system — scratch coat, backing coat, and finish skim. If someone says they will "plaster a room from scratch," that usually means all three stages.
